Ovechkin said that he is not interested in Hasek’s criticism for the Russians’ play in the NHL
Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin appreciated the critical statements of the Olympic champion, two-time Stanley Cup winner Dominik Hasek about the Russians in the National Hockey League (NHL). His words are quoted by Izvestia.
Ovechkin shared that he is not very interested in Hasek’s words. “NHL clubs select players based on skills and abilities, not nationality,” the forward noted.
Hasek is known for criticizing Russian athletes. He called for the removal of Russians from all international tournaments. In particular, the Czech proposed suspending the contracts of Russian players in the NHL, and later called on the league leaders to resign because of their position on Russia.
At the end of February 2022, most sports organizations suspended Russians and Belarusians from tournaments on the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee. At the same time, Russian players continue to play in the NHL without restrictions.
