Former world number one Halep banned for four years for doping
Romanian tennis player Simona Halep was disqualified for doping. This was reported on the website of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).
The 31-year-old athlete was suspended for four years. The sentence will expire on October 6, 2026.
The former first racket of the world, during her performance at the US Open 2022 in August 2022, gave a sample in which the banned substance roxadustat was found. In September, the athlete announced an early end to the season due to surgery on her nose. In October 2022, it became known about the positive sample A, after which Halep requested an autopsy of sample B.
Halep has 24 titles in Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tournaments, including victories at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. At the end of 2017 and 2018, the Romanian athlete topped the WTA rankings. She is now in ninth place on the list of the best tennis players in the world.
