Neymar overtakes Pele as Brazil’s top scorer
Brazil national football team striker Neymar has surpassed the record of his compatriot, three-time world champion Pele. This is reported by the correspondent of “Lenta.ru”.
Neymar scored in the home match of the 1st round of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup against Bolivia. The meeting ended with a score of 5:1 in favor of the hosts. For Neymar, this goal was his 78th for the Brazilian national team. Thus, he surpassed Pele in the list of top scorers of the national team. The champion scored 77 goals.
As part of the Brazilian national team, Neymar took part in three World Cups. At the 2014 tournament the team took fourth place, and in 2018 they reached the quarterfinals.
Pele is a three-time world football champion. He played for Santos for 18 years and became the champion of Brazil six times with the team. In 1999, the International Olympic Committee recognized the forward as the athlete of the century.
