Latvian hockey player Kalnins said he had no problems because of the game in Russia
The Latvian goalkeeper of the Khabarovsk “Amur” Janis Kalnins spoke about the attitude of compatriots to the fact that he plays in Russia. His words are quoted by Match TV.
The hockey player said that his performance in the Continental Hockey League (KHL), contrary to the ban of the Latvian authorities, did not lead to any problems. “Nobody approached me personally, didn’t say anything,” he stressed. According to Kalniņš, he decided to leave the Latvian national team because of his age.
Kalnins has been playing for the national team since the 2013/2014 season, and at the Beijing Olympics he was the main goalkeeper of the team. In the KHL, the goalkeeper played 234 matches for Dynamo Riga, Finnish Jokerit and Amur.
In March 2023, the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation refused to call up KHL players to the national team. Last season, two representatives of Latvia played in the league: Kalnins and forward Nikolai Eliseev from Admiral Vladivostok.
