The sticks prevented Uruguay from debuting with a victory in the World Cup in Qatar-2022 this Thursday against South Korea, in the opening of group H, and ended up drawing 0-0.

A header from Diego Godín at minute 43 and a furious shot from Fede Valverde at minute 89 were repelled by the uprights when the South Korean goalkeeper was beaten.

The game was played at the Education City stadium in Doha, in front of 41,663 spectators. On the second date, on Monday, Uruguay will face Portugal and South Korea will face Ghana.

With their star Son Heung-Min from the start, South Korea came out to suffocate Celeste, who in that first quarter of an hour could not get rid of the pressure of their rival or have the ball.

The electrifying Tottenham striker, who underwent surgery two weeks ago for a fractured left eye socket suffered in a Champions League game in early November, appeared wearing a black mask that covered almost his entire face.

Fede Valverde and Rodrigo Bentancur, those in charge of generating play in Diego Alonso’s eleventh, were absorbed by the Asian pressure and Uruguay lay down near their area to wait.

But the frenetic pace imposed by the Asian eleven lasted 15 minutes, during which the full-backs Kim Jinsu and Kim Moonhwan surprised Celeste with their speed, reaching the bottom but ending badly.

After 15 minutes, Uruguay began to take advantage of the overtaking of the Korean defense and Valverde gave the first warning at 19 minutes.

Three minutes later it was Facundo Pellistri who beat his winger’s back, headed into the middle and Darwin Núñez failed to finish off. It was the first scoring opportunity of the match.

At minute 27 Uruguay again found the South Korean defense ahead, but could not take advantage of it. Mathías Olivera shot from midfield and when he reached the area he gave up Darwin, but his pass was inaccurate and goalkeeper Kim arrived before the Liverpool striker and thwarted the danger.

Uruguay had already matched the process and continued to insist with Pellistri on the right. The 20-year-old Manchester United striker faced his marker and forced a pair of corners.

In one of them, at 43 minutes, Uruguay was about to open. Captain Diego Godín, who was playing his 160th game with the Uruguayan team, of which he is the record man, won on the penalty spot and headed down, but the ball hit the post and went wide when the Korean goalkeeper was defeated.

As a copy of the first half, Korea took the initiative again after the break, but did not worry goalkeeper Sergio Rochet.

Uruguay leaned back on their area and bet again to surprise against.

In this way, he was close to taking the lead again after 63 minutes with a quick run from Darwin Núñez, who left his marker seated, reached the bottom and put the pass back, but the Asian goalkeeper kept the ball.

A minute later Luis Suárez, who had gone unnoticed, left the field replaced by Edinson Cavani.

Already the Asians had lowered the revolutions again and the Celeste could handle the ball.

The Portuguese Paulo Bento made a triple change at 75 minutes looking to refresh his team and be able to press again as at the beginning. However, it was Uruguay who almost opened the account at 89 minutes, but Valverde’s spectacular shot from outside the area bounced off the corner of the Korean goal. (D)
