FIFA Suspends Rubiales for Kissing an Athlete at the Women’s World Cup
The disciplinary committee of the International Football Federation (FIFA) has suspended the head of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, for kissing an athlete from the national team at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. This was reported on the FIFA website.
The suspension is for 90 days. It comes into force on August 26 and will last until the start of disciplinary proceedings against the functionary. He is also forbidden to approach footballer Heniver Hermoso, whom he kissed.
On August 24, FIFA opened a disciplinary case against Rubiales due to an incident at the tournament. Later, the former Spanish football player Ana Romero urged him to leave the federation.
At the awards ceremony, Rubiales put on Spain captain Hermoso a medal and kissed the player on the lips. This drew criticism from the media and Spanish politicians. After the scandal, Rubiales apologized and stated that he did it without malicious intent.
