Belgium game suspended after field invasion

The match between Standard Liège and Charleroi, for the 17th round of the Belgian Championship, was suspended two minutes from the end of regular time, this Sunday, due to the launch of flares and invasion of the field by a group of fans.

When Charleroi was winning 3-0, the referee sent the players to the locker room after several Standard fans invaded the pitch, which prompted an action from the police present in the stadium.

The game had already been temporarily stopped around the 60th minute due to the launch of the first flares in the direction of the players.

According to local media, the incidents were not limited to the interior of the stadium. According to the newspaper The Last Hour / Sports, after the end of the match, a few hundred fans gathered at the entrance to the main stand, where the leaders of Liège were.

Fans threw objects, such as flags and protective barriers, at the police, who responded with tear gas.

Standard, which can be severely punished, has been going through a sporting and economic crisis in recent weeks.

The league responsible for the Belgian Championship “strongly condemned these incidents”, criticizing in a note sent to AFP “unacceptable, even criminal behavior”.
