Russian biathlete Daria Virolainen won the right to compete for Finland
Russian biathlete Daria Virolainen has changed sports citizenship to Finnish. This was reported on the website of the Finnish Biathlon Federation.
34-year-old Virolainen won the right to play for Finland in international tournaments. She was selected for the national team based on the results of the qualifying competition.
In 2021, Virolainen received Finnish citizenship. The last time she played on the international stage as part of the Russian national team was in the 2017/2018 season.
Virolainen is a former member of the Russian women’s biathlon team. She has two silver medals at the World Cup and a bronze medal at the 2014 European Biathlon Championships.
Russians and Belarusians did not participate in international tournaments in the 2022/2023 season by decision of the International Biathlon Union (IBU). The order came into effect in March 2022 and will remain in effect until further notice.
