With Casemiro and Antony in the starting line-up, Manchester United beat Wolverhampton in their Premier League debut

This Monday, due to the closing of the first round of the Premier League, Manchester United beat Wolverhampton, by 1 to 0, at the Old Trafford stadium, in Manchester. Raphael Varane scored the winning goal for Erik Ten Hag’s team.

The match marked the official debuts of goalkeeper Onana and attacking midfielder Mason Mount with the shirt of the Red Devils. The confrontation also had four Brazilians on the field: Antony and Casemiro started playing with United, while Matheus Cunha and João Gomes were in the starting 11 of the visiting team.

With the first round over, United are seventh in the table. The leader at this moment is Newcastle, who thrashed Aston Villa, by 5 to 1. Brighton, Manchester City and Arsenal, respectively, complete the G4.

O Manchester United returns to the lawns next Saturday (19), to face Tottenham, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, in London, at 13:30 (from Brasilia). The match is valid for the second round of the English Premier League.

Wolverhampton, on the other hand, host Brighton on Saturday too, but a little earlier. The ball rolls from 11 am, at Molineux Stadium, in the West Midlands.

The match between United and Wolves

The first half of the match was balanced and also truncated in midfield. The two teams fought a lot for possession of the ball and did not create many chances to score. Ten Hag’s United maintained possession but were unable to turn it into shots on target.

The first chance of the initial stage came from the feet of the Brazilian Matheus Cunha. The attacker received it with speed and invaded the penalty area, finishing in Onana’s goal. The kick, however, went wide.

Luke Shaw crossed low on the left and goalkeeper Sá came out to intercept the pass. However, he rebounded and Garnacho tried to complete for the goal. The Argentine, however, kicked very weakly and the visitors’ defense took away with a kick.

Wan-Bissaka, this time on the right, crossed for Rashford. The attacker managed to finish with a header, but the ball stopped in the chest of the Wolverhampton player. The Englishman asked for a penalty, but VAR didn’t score anything.

The second half was much like the first. Both teams made substitutions to give breath and try to win the result.

With 25 minutes, the visitors arrived with danger. In a counterattack led by Cunha, the ball was touched into the area, but United’s defense barely cleared it. On the left, Neto submitted on the hands of Onana.

The scoreboard was only inaugurated with 30 minutes of the complementary stage. Bruno Fernandes dug for Wan Bissaka, who received it inside the area and crossed Varane’s head. The defender only needed to complete the goal to open the scoring at Old Trafford.

In the final moments of the match, Wolves pressed for the tie, but Onana made good defenses and held the victory for the hosts. The video referee even checked a possible penalty for the visiting team in the 50th minute, but nothing was scored.
