Champion of Russia in swimming Sofya Spodarenko moved to the national team of Kazakhstan
Russian swimming champion Sofia Spodarenko on Instagram (the social network is banned in the Russian Federation; it belongs to the Meta corporation, which is recognized as extremist in Russia and banned) announced the change of sports citizenship.
The athlete said that she would now represent the national team of Kazakhstan. She stressed that the decision to move was not easy for her, but it was a conscious and mature choice. Spodarenko, 25, also thanked the All-Russian Swimming Federation. “This is the system I grew up with and performed well in,” she added.
Spodarenko was born in Kazakhstan. She is the 2018 Russian champion in the 50m butterfly.
In April 2022, the International Swimming Federation (World Aquatics) banned Russians from participating in competitions under its auspices. After that, several domestic swimmers changed sports citizenship.
