Mexico national team confirms Jaime Lozano as coach until 2026 World Cup

After being interim for a few months, the Mexican Jaime Lozano was confirmed as coach of mexican national team for the 2026 World Cup, which the country will host alongside the United States and Canada (and for which it is already automatically qualified).

“We have chosen Jaime Lozano to lead the senior national team project towards the 2026 World Cup,” said Ivar Sisniega, executive president of the Mexican Football Federation (FMF), in a message broadcast on the organization’s digital platforms.

On June 19, 44-year-old Lozano was named interim coach of the Mexican national team following the sacking of Argentine Diego Cocca, just days before the start of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Lozano managed ‘El Tri’ and took him to that Gold Cup in the final disputed against Panama, and with the title he was nominated to continue as coach of the selection permanently.

Ivar Sisniega defended the continuity of Jaime Lozano because the Mexican national team needed “a coach close and accessible to the players, who has good communication and knows how to motivate and support them in difficult moments, without neglecting discipline and order”.

Medalist in Tokyo

Jaime Lozano, the 46th coach in the history of the Mexican national team since 1923, began his career as a coach in the local league, in which he managed two clubs: ‘Gallos Blancos’ from Querétaro (2017) and ‘Rayos’ from Necaxa (2022).

In 2018 he was appointed coach of the Mexico under-23 team with which he won a bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Lima 2019 and later won the Concacaf pre-Olympic tournament in 2020.

At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics – held in 2021 – he led ‘El Tri’ Olímpico to win the bronze medal.

“We wanted to give confidence to a Mexican coach,” added Sisniega in his message. “It’s time to recognize that there are coaches who have prepared themselves and who deserve the opportunity to lead our team”.

With his appointment, the Mexican returned to be the head coach of the Aztec national team after the passages of the Colombian Juan Carlos Osorio (2015-18) and the Argentines Gerardo Martino (2019-22) and Diego Cocca (2023).

According to Ivar Sisniega, the FMF considered the Mexican to be “a coach with an avant-garde vision of football, with a desire to continue learning”.

The next matches for the Mexican national team, already with Jaime Lozano as head coach, will be in the United States, in September; on Saturday, the 9th, against Australia, and on Tuesday, the 12th, against Uzbekistan.
