With a knee injury, Buendía will miss Aston Villa for much of the season

Aston Villa midfielder Emiliano Buendía has suffered “significant knee ligament damage”, the club said. Premier League in a statement released on Thursday and could be sidelined for up to eight months, according to his coach Unai Emery.

Buendía, 26 years old and who also plays for argentina national team, was injured during training on Wednesday. An MRI confirmed the severity of his injury.

The midfielder has scored nine goals in 73 games for Villa in the Premier League since joining from Norwich in 2021 for £33m.

“Injuries are the worst thing in football; for the player, for the club, for the teammates…”, said the Villa coach, Unai Emery, this Thursday, during the press conference before Saturday’s game, away home against Newcastle for the first round of the Premier League. “We are not talking about a month, two or three. This injury could mean six, seven or eight months,” continued the Spaniard.

“It is a difficult moment for him and yesterday we were very saddened by the news we received. We will have to be patient, support him and hope that he recovers as quickly as possible,” he added.

Emery added that Jacob Ramsey, Alex Moreno, Leander Dendoncker, Bertrand Traoré, Tim Iroegbunam and 19-year-old Colombia striker Jhon Durán are also out of action at St James Park.
