In 1997, Ronaldo Nazário was transferred from Barcelona to the Inter Milan, where he would win the FIFA Best in the World award and also the nickname “Phenomenon”. In an interview with Betfairthe star recalled his arrival in Italy and admitted the importance of the championship for his professional development.
“The Italian Championship inspired me a lot, and inspired all of us Brazilians who saw the generation of Maradona, Careca, Alemão, Baresi, Maldini, Van Basten and Gullit, Bremen, Matheus and Klinsmann. I always looked at the Italian Championship as a very big competition, a championship that became the biggest in the world for many years, and that all challenged me leaving me with a great desire to compete in the Italian. When the opportunity arose, I fulfilled my dream and it was wonderful, playing in the Italian championship, discovering Italy. It was a fantastic experience”, said Ronaldo in an interview.
Ronaldo’s spell at Inter Milan lasted five years, from 1997 to 2002, and earned the Italian team the 1997 UEFA Cup title. In all, there were 99 games and 59 goals. The striker would return to Italy in 2007 to play a single season for Milan.
