A day after the departure of Spaniard Julen Lopetegui, Wolverhampton announced on Wednesday the English Gary O’Neil as their new coach.
Lopetegui, who had taken office in November last year, left the club due to “differences of opinion on some issues” with the board, especially the signing policy.
O’Neil, 40, is considered one of the best coaches of his generation. He has been tipped to succeed the Spaniard since being sacked by Bournemouth, despite miraculously saving them from relegation last season.
“It’s a pleasure to welcome Gary to the club,” Wolverhampton sporting director Matt Hobbs said in a statement. “He IS a young coach, very motivated and praised by everyone he has worked with. We are looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together”, adds the note.
Gary O’Neil has been appointed as our new head coach.
Welcome to the club, Gary 🤝
