New coach takes over China’s soccer team

China announced this Friday Li Xiaopeng as its new national coach. He replaces Lie Tie, who stepped down due to the team’s poor results in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Li Xiaopeng, a former midfielder for the Chinese national team, has until now coached Wuhan FC, in the Chinese first division. Curiously. China’s new coach was part of the team that participated in the 2002 World Cup, the only one the country has played in history, along with Lie Tie.

After losing 3-2 to Saudi Arabia in October, the Chinese team drew with Oman and Australia, results that greatly compromised the country’s classification for the Cup in Qatar next year, as it occupies fifth place in its group ( composed of 6 teams) and only the top two qualify for the World Cup.

The new coach’s predecessor, 44-year-old Li Tie, is a former Everton star; He was also accused of taking advantage of his position to promote products on social media.

He took over as coach two years ago from Italian Marcello Lippi.
