The Ecuadorian speed skating already has five medals.
The World Patinodromo track seems to have been built so that Colombian sprinters know how to finish after the complicated concave curve, which is difficult for them to grasp the rest of the participants.
There, in that curve, the gold medals were practically defined in favor of the locals, with the exception of one that Brazil took in the 500 meters + distance, because the Colombian had a fall; not so in the remaining four tests, which had the Ecuadorians as rivals.
What happened this Wednesday was the copy of what happened a day before to María Loreto Arias, who lost both golds in the 200-meter goal-to-goal and 1,000-meter women’s sprint events. Lore herself suffered it this day in one of her favorite tests, the 500 meters + distance. And although she did not get on the podium with first place, she showed satisfaction when she found out that until December 1, she became the Team Ecuador athlete with the most silver medals competing days in a row.
“The gold escapes me again, but I have faith that in my last test I can get it. But it fills me with satisfaction to know that I am the athlete of the Ecuadorian delegation that has won the most medals and in two days of competition. I have three medals to dedicate and I take this opportunity to thank my father, who, despite having a difficult time due to COVID-19, wanted to come and be present to support me, “he said.
In the afternoon session, a 16-year-old girl named Martina Pita appeared, an unknown person in front of the young women up to 20 years of age who did not have her as a dangerous rival. The 10,000-meter elimination test, Martina had only run it once at the international level before arriving in Cali 2021, right in the senior championship in Manizales.
“For me all this was new, but I had faith that I could fight for the gold medal, and I always ran ahead with the Colombian, changing the lead every lap. My mother Claudia had arrived from Ecuador and that was my best injection of encouragement to continue leading. I am happy to have won a silver medal, which will undoubtedly help me to grow and aim for new goals in the Olympic Cycle ”, he pointed out.
The day closed with a bittersweet flavor by the Ecuadorian sprinter Joel Guacho, who practically, of the 50 laps on the 200-meter track that comprises the circuit, was almost always first, but the auction left him without gold for tenths of a second. “It was a tough test and I was very confident, but not confident to win the test. This time it did not happen, but there is no doubt that thanks to the support of many people, such as our psychologist Gabriela, the Ecuadorian Skating Federation, the Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Sports, I will continue to fight to reach the podium in the first place . Tomorrow (this Thursday) will be a new day and it may be that, in the test I run, the day will be for me ”.
This Thursday, December 2, Ecuadorian skating will return to competition at the World Patinodromo, this time in the 10,000-meter point test, with the same competitors as today: Martina Pita and Joel Guacho.
