France’s Marchand breaks Milk Phelps’ record in the 400m individual medley
Frenchman Leon Marchand broke the world record in the 400m medley at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. This was reported on the website of the International Aquatics Federation (FINA).
The athlete covered the distance in four minutes and 2.50 seconds. The previous record belonged to the 23-time Olympic champion, American Michael Phelps and was four minutes and 03.84 seconds. He installed it at the 2008 Beijing Games. Thus, Phelps’s last current world record in the 50-meter pool fell.
American Carson Foster finished second, 4.06 seconds back. Japan’s Daya Seto is in third place, 6.91 seconds back.
Phelps is the only 23-time Olympic champion and 26-time world champion in the history of sports. The American is the absolute record holder in the number of Olympic awards (28). He ended his career in 2016.
