Chess player Karpov said he did not understand Ukraine’s refusal to let Ivanchuk out of the country
Honorary President of the Russian Chess Federation (RCF) Anatoly Karpov commented on Ukraine’s refusal to release grandmaster Vasily Ivanchuk from the country to participate in the World Cup of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
The chess player said that he did not understand the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, and called Ivanchuk a great patriot of the country. “He’s Ukrainian, how can you not let him out?” asked Karpov.
Earlier, on July 22, FIDE stated that, according to the current legislation, Ivanchuk needed permission from the Ministry of Youth and Sports to leave the country for sports purposes, which he was denied. It is noted that the request from the organizers of the World Cup, the Azerbaijan Chess Federation, was also rejected.
The World Cup will be held in Baku from July 29 to August 25. Ivanchuk received a wild card from FIDE to participate in this tournament.
