The president of Olympique de Marseille, Pablo Longoria, announced this Friday the departure of the captain of the team, the French attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet, with a year of the end of his contract.
“We decided not to continue the adventure with our captain. That took many weeks of reflection, of conversations”, declared Longoria, next to the player, during a press conference at the VΓ©lodrome stadium.
Payet, 36, has a contract with Olympique until June 2024.

The midfielder, who has 38 appearances and eight goals for the France national team, said that “after a very difficult season, with little playing time”, he has not yet made a decision about his future.
Payet spent eight and a half seasons at the Marseille team, adding the two passages from 2013 to 2015 and from 2017 to 2023. During these periods, he played 326 games and scored 78 goals, without winning titles for the club.
Between his two spells at Olympique, he played for West Ham, in England.
