The team’s Danish cyclist Soudal Quick-Step Kasper Asgreen ha cattle this thursday the eighteenth stage of the 2023 Tour de France, which was finally decided among the four men who made up the day’s breakaway, since the peloton, which seemed to have this breakaway under control, was unable to catch them. In the general rankingalso Danish from Jumbo-Visma Jonas Vingegaard continue as leaderafter a day in which there have been no relevant changes.

A stage was foreseen in which the fast men could have their opportunity, and the truth is that for many kilometers it has given the impression that the script had many ballots to be fulfilled, but that has not happened. Fatigue, after almost three weeks on the Tour, takes its toll on the riders, and what seemed like it was going to happen, that is, that the peloton was going to neutralize the escapees without any major difficulties, who have been with a maximum of a minute and a half advantage all day, has not happened.

Kasper Asgreen he has claimed the victory, and has given his team the first victory in this Tour, after having insistently sought it. For the 28-year-old Dane, champion of his country in time trial, it is also his first stage in the Tour de France, and he adds it to a brilliant record that includes, among other important achievements, the Tour of Flanders in 2021. Asgreen has been the strongest of the breakaway, and has managed to assert his good moment against his three rivals, Victor Campenaerts and Pascal Eenkhorn (Lotto Dstny) and Jonas Abrahmsen (Uno-X)who were unable to overtake him at the Bourg-en-Bresse finish line.

The escape of the day has not taken long to take place, and three level riders have starred in it: the Belgian Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Dstny), a regular in breakaways, the Norwegian Jonas Abrahmsen (Uno-X) and Kasper Asgreen himself. Although they have been fast and have understood each other well, they have not finished establishing a significant difference with respect to the peloton.

Apparently well controlled by the sprinter teams, the large group did not allow Campenaerts, Abrahamsen and Asgreen to get more than a minute and a half ahead. In this way, the stage has remained for quite a few kilometers at a point of a certain balance, with the three leading the way, but in a situation that also seemed to interest those behind.

With just under 60 kilometers to go, there was a movement that had weight in the outcome of the day: the Dutchman from Lotto Pascal Eenkhorn he jumped out of the peloton, and, with the help of Campenaerts, he didn’t take long to link up with the front men, who have come to form a quartet. Their advantage was still around the minute mark, with the race close to entering its last 40 kilometres, but the pace of the front four has gained in vigor, and the large group was unable to reduce the gap clearly.
