Inter Miami signs Paraguay midfielder Diego Gómez from Libertad

Inter Miami continues with the reconstruction of its squad after the arrival of Argentine star Lionel Messi, and has signed Paraguayan midfielder Diego Gómez, informed the team of the MLS this Wednesday.

The 20-year-old arrives in Miami with a two-and-a-half-year contract from Libertad, a club that already had the new coach of Inter Miami, Argentinean Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, in charge for two seasons.

Gomez is Inter’s third signing, bottom of the MLS, this transfer window, joining Messi and Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets.

A third former Barcelona player, Spanish left-back Jordi Alba, is expected to complete his transfer to Inter Miami in the coming days.

“Diego is a complete midfielder who we believe will contribute at all stages of the game. We believe in his ability and potential that will expand our team’s potential,” said Inter Miami sporting director Chris Henderson.

Gómez played 51 games as captain for Paraguay’s under-20 team and four for the senior team.

Inter Miami owner, Cuban-American Jorge Mas, said on Tuesday that more signings are expected this summer.

Another young South American, 20-year-old Argentine attacking midfielder Facundo Farías, has a verbal agreement to move to the club, added Mas.

The Miami owner added that they are also in talks with two young talents from the Argentine league: Racing Club defender Tomás Avilés and Newell’s Old Boys striker Brian Aguirre.

But he also suggested that former Barcelona and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, 36, could be another signing if he manages to get out of his contract with Gremio.

“I don’t know how Luis Suárez could leave Grêmio. But if he does, we are free to talk with Luis and bring him to Inter Miami. That possibility would be there”, he added.

Messi and Busquets will be able to debut with their new club on Friday against Cruz Azul of Mexico in the League Cup.
