Sevilla beat Del Valle on penalties in the UEFA-Conmebol ‘Club Challenge’

The Spaniard Sevilla was the winner of the new duel organized in partnership by UEFA and Conmebol, the ‘Club Challenge’, by beating Ecuadorian Independiente del Valle at home this Wednesday (19) (4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw).

Serbian goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic was the hero of the night, saving two of the visitors’ free-kicks: Argentinian Lorenzo Faravelli and Bolivian Marcelo Martins Moreno. Of the Ecuadorian team, only Michael Hoyos converted his.

The penalty that secured the victory for Sevilla, who did not miss a shot, was taken by Argentine Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gómez.

Sevilla managed to force the penalty shootout – the rules of the match did not include extra time – by equalizing in stoppage time (90+1′) through Pedro Ortiz, after Independiente del Valle opened the scoring through Argentine Lautaro Díaz, in the 10th minute.

The current champion of the Europa League thus beat the winner of the last Copa Sudamericana and won a trophy that is part of the collaboration projects that Uefa and Conmebol have promoted in recent years.
