The State Duma is preparing a bill that will oblige athletes to pay for the change of citizenship

The State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports is preparing a bill that will oblige Russian athletes to pay compensation for changing citizenship. It is reported by TASS.

“This is the money of our taxpayers, which should not be wasted,” said committee chairman Dmitry Svishchev. It is clarified that athletes who independently paid for their training, as well as those who for three years before the change of citizenship were not a candidate for the Russian national team, will be exempted from compensation payments.

On July 6, Svetlana Zhurova, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs and Olympic champion in speed skating, proposed punishing Russian athletes who change citizenship in the current situation. “My colleagues and I need to think about this, namely about legislative restrictions. I mean prohibiting the return of Russian citizenship to those who first changed it intentionally, ”said Zhurova.

At the end of February 2022, most sports organizations suspended Russians and Belarusians from tournaments on the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The International Skating Union (ISU) has also imposed sanctions on country representatives.
