The organizers of the tennis challenger in Poland asked the Russians to refuse to participate
The organizers asked the Russian tennis players to refuse to participate in the Challenger series tournament in the Polish village of Kozerki. This is stated in the message on the website of the event.
“Given the situation in Ukraine, please do not apply for participation in the tournament representing countries such as Russia and Belarus,” the organizers said. They stressed that Russian and Belarusian athletes would not be allowed to compete.
In the spring of 2022, tennis players from Russia and Belarus were banned from playing in tournaments in the UK. Due to sanctions, domestic athletes were forced to miss Wimbledon. In 2023 they were allowed to start.
At the end of February 2022, most sports organizations suspended Russians and Belarusians from tournaments on the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee. At the same time, the Russians continue to play in tournaments under the auspices of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) in a neutral status.
