Russian figure skater, two-time world and European champion Evgenia Medvedeva said that in fact she had already completed her sports career due to injuries. She stated this in an interview with journalist Karen Adamyan, published on YouTube.
According to the athlete, last year she was serious about continuing to compete, but back problems forced her to end the sport. So, Medvedeva noted, due to a back injury that worsened her in 2020, she can no longer perform most of the jumps.
“My back does not turn to one side … The jump, which I can jump painlessly and normally, is salchow. Well, perhaps another sheepskin coat, and even then not always. In principle, flip and lutz don’t jump, purely physically they don’t jump anymore, ”the skater explained.
At the same time, she noted that so far she does not want to announce her retirement officially, because she does not want to face the pressure from the fans, which may fall on her after such statements.
Earlier, the former coach of Medvedeva, who worked with the athlete from 2018 to 2020, Brian Orser said that one of the reasons for the skater’s departure was the coronavirus pandemic. According to him, the athlete at first was unable to return to Canada after the show in Japan, and then fell ill with COVID-19. “She was very bad, and then she decided to stop performing,” – said Orser.
