Former Nigerian striker Nwankwo Kanu has been named chairman of Enyimba, the defending champions and one of Nigeria’s great clubs. The announcement was made this Wednesday by the governor of the Abia region, Alex Otti.
Enymba’s current coach is former striker Finidi George, who was Kanu’s teammate in the ‘Super Eagles’ and led the team that won its ninth Nigerian Championship title in June.
The club, owned by the regional government of Abia, was champion of the African Champions League in 2003 and 2004.
Kanu, who throughout his career stood out for Inter Milan e Arsenalwon the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games with Nigeria, defeating Argentina in the decision.
In the semi-final, he found the net twice against Brazilone of them scoring the ‘golden goal’, which sealed the Nigerians’ 4-3 victory in overtime.
