Ex-first racket of the world Martina Hingis stood up for Andreeva punished at Wimbledon

Former world number one Martina Hingis stood up for 16-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva, who was punished for unsportsmanlike behavior at Wimbledon 2023. Hingis’ words are quoted by Tennis Majors.

“It could happen. When you are young, you have emotions – sometimes they are good, sometimes they are bad. So far, nothing dangerous is happening,” Hingis said. She emphasized that you need to control your emotions, but noted that the same thing happened to her.

On July 11, it became known that Andreeva was punished for unsportsmanlike behavior in the fourth round match at Wimbledon. The reason was that the tennis player threw a racket on the court at the end of the third set. According to Sky Sports, the athlete was fined eight thousand dollars.

On July 10, Andreeva lost to American Madison Keys in the 1/8 final match of the tournament. The meeting ended with the score 6:3, 6:7 (4:7), 2:6. In the final game of the third set, Andreeva received a penalty point for throwing a racket. The Russian woman tried to explain to the referee that she fell on the court and therefore dropped her racket, that is, she did not do it on purpose. However, her arguments were not accepted, and punishment followed.
