WTA says it respects Ukrainians’ refusal to shake hands with Russians
The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) appreciated the refusal of Ukrainians to shake hands with Russians and Belarusians at tournaments. This is reported in Twitter organizations.
The WTA said that they respect the decision of the Ukrainians. “We have some of the best fans in the world and we are grateful for their passion and dedication, and we also thank them for their understanding and respect for the athletes,” the organization said in a statement.
On July 10, Ukrainian Elina Svitolina addressed the Association of Tennis Professionals and the WTA during a press conference at Wimbledon 2023. Svitolina called on tennis organizations to issue a statement that there would be no handshakes between Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian players.
Ukrainian tennis players do not shake hands with Russians and Belarusians, and do not take joint photos after matches. In response, the audience booed the athletes.
