Elina Svitolina urged ATP and WTA to declare that Ukrainians will not shake hands with Russians
Ukrainian Elina Svitolina addressed the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) during a press conference at Wimbledon 2023. Her words leads TalkSPORT.
Svitolina called on tennis organizations to issue a statement that there would be no handshakes between Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian players. “I don’t know, maybe it’s not clear enough for people. Some really don’t understand what’s going on,” she shared. In her opinion, this would be the right thing to do.
Ukrainian tennis players do not shake hands with Russians and Belarusians, and do not take joint photos after matches. In response, the audience booed the athletes.
WTA and ATP did not completely remove the Russians and Belarusians. Athletes take part in the tournament in a neutral status.
