First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs and Olympic speed skating champion Svetlana Zhurova revealed the meaning of inviting Russian athletes to the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. Her words are quoted by TASS.
The MP said that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is insured so that the Russians can qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024. She drew attention to the fact that the Asian Games will be held in China, where Russian athletes can be provided with security.
On July 8, Inside the Games reported that the Russians would be allowed to compete in neutral status and would not be eligible for medals. It was noted that the decision on admission was made in order to give the Russians the opportunity to take part in the selection for the Olympics in Paris.
Later, the President of the Russian Olympic Committee, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, denied the information about the invitation of Russia to the 2023 Asian Games. He noted that there is little time left before the tournament, so questions arise regarding the prospects for the full-fledged training of athletes.
