David de Gea announces his departure from Manchester United after 12 years

Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea announced his departure from the Manchester United after twelve years defending the ‘Red Devils’ goal, with a message on Twitter.

De Gea, who won the Golden Glove last season as the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets in Premier League, received criticism for errors at the end of the season. His contract with Manchester United expired on the last day of June, without an agreement having been reached, despite negotiations for his continuity at the Old Trafford club.

Manchester United, according to some media, may be interested in the Cameroonian goalkeeper of Inter MilanAndre Onana.

In a message on social networks, De Gea, 32, thanked Manchester United fans for their support, but informed the need for a change of scenery: “Now is the right time to face a new challenge, to launch myself again into a new environment”, began the goalkeeper. “Manchester will always be in my heart, Manchester formed me and will never leave me,” he added.

“I’d like to express my deep gratitude and appreciation for the love over the past 12 years. We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club,” said De Gea, for whom it was “an incredible pride to wear this shirt (. ..) and represent the biggest club in the world”.

Current Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag thanked De Gea for his services. “It takes a lot of quality and character to reach the level of playing a single game for Manchester United,” he began. “To do this 545 times in 12 years is a special achievement, especially as a goalkeeper.”
