Georges Bereta, former captain of Saint-Étienne and France, dies

Georges Bereta, who captained Saint-Étienne and selection of france in the 1960s and 1970s, died on Tuesday at the age of 74, the French club said.

Born in Saint-Étienne, Bereta, who played as a left winger, played 343 games for the club and scored 68 goals between 1966. He was French champion six times and won the Coupe de France on three occasions.

Bereta made 44 appearances for the French national team (4 goals scored), 12 of them as captain.

In January 1975, he was sold against his will to the Marseille Olympicsa club for which he played 96 games and scored ten goals, winning the French Cup the following year.

Saint-Étienne was European runner-up in 1976 and Bereta was not part of that historic campaign for his beloved team, something that always drew criticism from the club’s president at the time, Roger Rocher.
