Atletico de San Luis from Mexico, by Brazilian coach Gustavo Leal, debuted this Saturday for Liga MX, for Apertura 2023, with good performance. At home, the team from San Luis de Potosí received Monterrey and tied 1-1, however, with a dominant performance.
“I am very satisfied with the performance we had. Monterrey was the leader of the last edition of the tournament, semifinalist of the final phase and is a team that everyone fears to face. We did it with our heads held high, we played our game, we had more of the ball and we reached the opponent’s goal more often. I’m not going to regret the missed opportunities, I prefer to value everything good we did, because it was a lot. These players are to be congratulated and I thank them for their commitment and work”, said Gustavo Leal, after his debut .
“My objective will always be to leave this stadium and find the fans with a smile on their face in the streets, outside. I think we achieved that today,” he added.

In the match, Atlético de San Luis wasted opportunities to turn the match around. The team coached by Gustavo Leal still had at least two great chances in the small area, one of them concluded with a header on the crossbar.
“My job is to ensure that these players are 100% adapted to the way we want to play. I am very satisfied with this debut, but I think there is still a good margin for growth. This squad has a lot of potential and a lot to grow. Now, with the beginning of the tournament and the recurrence of matches at a high level, I believe that we will evolve with each round”, said Leal.
Atlético de San Luis has two Brazilian players in the starting lineup: defensive midfielder Rodrigo Dourado, formerInternationaland winger Vitinho, formerSão Paulo. In the next round of Liga MX, the opponent will be another traditional club from Mexico: Chivas Guadalajara, next Saturday.
Carioca born in Petrópolis, Gustavo Leal was André Jardine’s technical assistant at Atlético de San Luis, in the last three tournaments, and took charge after Jardine left for América, also from Mexico.
Before working in Mexico, Gustavo Leal, 37, was André Jardine’s assistant also on the Brazilian Under-23 team, during the Olympic cycle that ended with the gold medal in Tokyo. Between 2015 and 2019, Leal worked in Fluminense’s youth teams, having been a youth coach.
