Shevchenko said that Russian and Belarusian athletes should not be allowed to compete
Former football player and coach of the Ukrainian national team Andriy Shevchenko spoke about the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international tournaments. His words are quoted by Sky News.
“My position on this issue is very clear. Not a single Russian or Belarusian athlete should participate in the competition, ”he commented on the possible return of athletes from these countries to the international arena.
In May, Shevchenko was criticized by Ukrainian footballer Roman Zozulya for sitting next to Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic during the first Champions League semi-final match between Milan and Inter. Zozulya considered it wrong to sit next to a pro-Russian athlete.
On March 28, the International Olympic Committee recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in a neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be suspended from participating in tournaments.
