Russian national team coach Glazunov will be fired due to the participation of fencers in the US championship
The head coach of the Russian national sword team Alexander Glazunov will be fired due to the decision of several Russian fencers to compete in the US Championships. It is reported by TASS.
“Due to the flight of his athletes to the United States without the consent of the federation, including the current officer of the National Guard [Сергея] Bid and active serviceman [Виолетты] Khrapina, Glazunov will be relieved of his post, ”the Russian Fencing Federation (FFR) said in a statement.
On July 1, the US Fencing Federation announced that it would allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the national championship. According to the Inside The Games portal, in addition to Bida and Khrapina, the tournament will feature epee fencer Oleg Knysh and saber fencer Konstantin Lokhanov, who is the ex-husband of two-time Olympic champion Sofia Pozdnyakova.
In March, the European Fencing Confederation allowed Russian athletes to participate in tournaments in a neutral status. However, the organization later denied entry to many athletes, including Olympic champions Yana Yegoryan, Sofia Velikaya, Sofia Pozdnyakova and Olga Nikitina.
