O Botafogo announced this Friday the departure of coach Luís Castro, who leaves the club after accepting a proposal from Al Nassr, a Saudi Arabian club that has Cristiano Ronaldo in its squad. After days analyzing the offer and conversations with John Textor, owner of Fogão, and managers, the Portuguese coach chose to leave Glorioso and take charge of the Saudi team.
Along with Luís Castro, assistants Vitor Severino and João Brandão, physical trainer Roberto de Oliveira, goalkeeper Daniel Correia and performance analyst Nuno Baptista also left Botafogo.
Luís Castro arrived at Botafogo, coming from Al Duhail, Qatar, in March 2022 to ‘lead’ the club’s new SAF phase. In all, in 80 matches, the coach won 41 wins, 14 draws and 25 defeats (approximately 51% success rate).
The Rio de Janeiro club will receive R$ 10 million for the payment of Luís Castro’s termination fine. The coach will sign a two-year contract with Al Nassr.
During his tenure, the Portuguese coach won the Rio Cup in 2023 and leaves the command of the Rio de Janeiro club as leader of the Brazilian championship and qualified for the round of 16 of the Sul-Americana.
Now, Botafogo is running out of time to analyze the market and get its new coach right. There is still no concrete target, but the decision for the next coach should happen soon.
In next Sunday’s classic, against Vasco, in Engenhão, Lúcio Flávio, coach of Botafogo’s B team, should be the commander of the team.
Check out the official note from Botafogo:
Luis Castro is no longer the coach of Botafogo
