UEFA completes review of Negreira case and allows Barcelona to play in the Champions League
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has allowed Barcelona to play in the Champions League in the 2023/2024 season. Reported by Cadena SER.
UEFA has completed an investigation into a corruption case involving the former vice president of the Technical Committee of Referees of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, José María Enríquez Negreira. Thus, the Catalans will not be suspended from tournaments.
In March 2023, corruption proceedings began against Barcelona. It was reported that between 2001 and 2018, the club’s management transferred more than seven million euros to Negreira. The functionary himself claimed that he only advised the team on the decisions of the judges, since the Catalans wanted to make sure that the referees were not biased towards them.
In the 2022/2023 season, Barcelona won the Spanish championship and received a license to participate in the Champions League next season. The team won La Liga for the 27th time in its history.
