Pelé congratulated Argentine Lionel Messi this Monday for winning his seventh Golden Ball, with a message on social media.
“Congratulations @leomessi, for another Ballon d’Or. It’s certainly a fair tribute to a unique talent,” wrote the Brazilian star.
“Seven times, thank you very much!”
Messi was awarded earlier in Paris with the trophy for best player of the year, given by France Football magazine.
Although Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé, never won this award, he was recognized in 2000 as Player of the 20th Century by FIFA experts.
The ‘King’ is the only player to win three World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970).
But the Argentine star broke one of his records as top scorer for a South American team last September, surpassing the 77-goal mark.
Pelé, 81, is undergoing chemotherapy after an operation on Sept. 5 in which a suspected colon tumor was removed.
