The technician of RomaJosé Mourinho, will serve a suspension for the first two rounds of next season’s A league for having insulted a referee, announced this Wednesday the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in a statement.
The FIGC disciplinary commission imposed a ten-day suspension, counting from the start of the 2023-2024 season. Serie A will start its new season on the weekend of August 19th and 20th.
Mourinho was punished for telling referee Daniele Chiffi, who officiated Roma’s away game against Monza on 3 May, that he was “the worst referee” he had encountered in his career.
“It’s unfortunate, he doesn’t make any human connections and he doesn’t feel any empathy,” said the Portuguese of the referee. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Portuguese coach and his club will each have to pay a fine of 50,000 euros (R$ 264,000 at current prices).
José Mourinho will also miss Roma’s first four games in the Europa League next season, in application of a sanction decided by UEFA for having insulted another referee, the Englishman Anthony Taylor, in the final lost by the Italian team against Sevilla (1-1 after extra time, 4-1 to the Spaniards in the penalty shootout).
