Strasbourg, despite having remained in the top flight of the French Championship, announced the resignation of coach Frédéric Antonetti this Tuesday.
The 61-year-old coach had taken over on February 13, succeeding Mathieu Le Scornet, who has been acting since the departure of Julien Stéphan, who was sacked in January.
Strasbourg were 17th in Ligue 1 and were in the relegation zone at the time of Antonetti’s arrival. The team had only won three of their 23 league games, in a campaign far below expectations, especially compared to the previous season, when they finished sixth.
Under Antonett, Strasbourg managed a run of six wins and four draws in 15 rounds and finished in 15th place, five points clear of the first team in the relegation zone, Auxerre.
After the end of the season, Strasbourg was bought by the American consortium BlueCo, which also owns Chelsea. The acquisition was announced on Thursday last week.
According to the club’s statement, Antonetti’s departure was decided “by mutual agreement”.
“A new cycle begins and I’m sure it was better to end like this. The two parties have reached an agreement”, said Marc Keller, president of Strasbourg.
