United States draw late against Jamaica in CONCACAF Gold Cup opener

With a saving goal by Brandon Vázquez, the United States drew 1-1 with Jamaica on Saturday night, in the opening of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup, in Chicago (Illinois).

Defender Damion Lowe put Jamaica ahead in the 13th minute and Mexican-American Brandon Vázquez equalized in the final straight, in the 88th minute of the game, at Soldier Field.

The United States, who will try to defend the 2021 title despite the absence of their highlights, only managed to add a point against the Jamaican team, which had the opportunity to increase the advantage in the first half in a penalty saved by goalkeeper Matt Turner.

“This goal means everything to me. Being able to return to the team and score makes me very happy,” said the striker, who made his US debut in January after ruling out the possibility of playing for Mexico, the nation of his parents.

The draw leaves the Team USA and the Reggae Boyz tied at the top of Group A, which is completed by Trinidad and Tobago and São Cristóvão and Neves, who face each other this Sunday.

On the same day, the b-group matches between Mexico and Honduras and between Haiti and Qatar will also be played.

The Gold Cup, in which 15 teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean participate, in addition to the guest Qatar, will be played in the United States until the final, scheduled for July 16, in Los Angeles (California).
