Italian referee Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi will be the first woman in history to referee a match Italian Championship this weekend, according to an announcement by the Italian Football Federation.
Serie A and the Italian Association of Referees (AIA) have confirmed that the match in question will be between Sassuolo and Salernitana, next Sunday, at 10 am (GMT).
“Maria Sole will make her Serie A debut due to her merits. We don’t give privileges. She deserved it. It is an achievement for the entire arbitration sector”, said the director of the AIA, Alfredo Trentalange, at a press conference this Wednesday.
Promoted to the elite of Italian referees in July, Ferrieri Caputi refereed 23 matches in the third division (Serie C) last season, in addition to one game in the second level (Serie B) and one in the Coppa Italia.
Recently, the Italian was also selected by FIFA to participate in the Under-17 Women’s World Cup, which takes place between October 11 and 30, in India.
