Osasuna denounced through a statement published on Friday that it had received a report from UEFA declaring the team “ineligible” to participate in the Conference League next season, as a result of the conviction of former directors of the club almost a decade ago.
“Osasuna was aware of the conditions in the report drawn up by the inspectors of the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Committee. In such document, the inspectors declare the club’s ‘ineligibility’ to participate in the Conference League 2023/2024, denying the conquered right to fair way on the field to participate in European competitions”, says the statement from the Spanish club.
The reason for this recommendation is the sentence of the Supreme Court of Spain that condemns several former Osasuna managers for match-fixing in the 2013/2014 season.
“UEFA did not want to take into account that it was the Spanish courts themselves that declared, literally, that Osasuna was the victim of embezzlement carried out by some of its former directors”, adds the statement.
The club points out that, with this decision, UEFA punishes the current management, which “rightly opened a judicial process to recover the money illegally subtracted from the entity’s coffers and restore its credibility”.
Osasuna managed to qualify for the Conference League by finishing the Spanish Championship of last season in seventh position.
