Playing at La Romareda stadium in Zaragoza, Spain were defeated by Switzerland 2-1 this Saturday and now will have to face a decision with Portugal who qualifies for the semi-finals of the League of Nations.
Manuel Akanji opened the scoring for the Swiss in the 21st minute of the first half, Jordi Alba equalized in the 10th minute of the second half and Breel Embolo scored the second for the visiting team.
With the result, Switzerland leaves the bottom of Group 2 and next Tuesday will receive the Czech Republic in a direct confrontation that is worth the escape against relegation.
The Spaniards go to the last round needing an away win over Portugal if they want to be among the semifinalists of the competition.
“On Tuesday we have an important final. We have to win, show that we have the capacity to play matches of this level”, said ‘Roja’ striker Borja Iglesias.
The Portuguese team took the lead in the group by beating the Czech Republic 4-0 in Prague, with goals from Diogo Dalot (2x), Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Jota.
The star Cristiano Ronaldo spent the game in white, but starred in a strong image. The forward required medical attention for a nosebleed after colliding with Czech goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik.
After five rounds, Portugal has 10 points against 8 for Spain, 6 for Switzerland and 4 for the Czech Republic.
