Dutch cyclist van der Pool arrested ahead of World Championship race
Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Pool was arrested during the World Championships in Australia. This is reported by the Belgian portal Sporza.
On the eve of the race, on the evening of September 24, the athlete had a verbal skirmish with the girls who knocked on his hotel door several times. According to police, he pushed the teenagers, as a result of which one of them received a minor elbow injury.
After that, van der Pool was arrested and taken to the police station. It is noted that the driver, who was there until four in the morning, took away his passport. He was also ordered to appear in court on Tuesday, September 27.
Despite the incident, 27-year-old van der Poel decided to take part in Sunday’s race. However, after 30 kilometers, the athlete retired from the race (267 kilometers). Belgian Remco Evenepul became the winner of the race.
Van der Pool is a four-time cyclocross world champion. He also has three victories at the European Championship.
