The most successful footballer in Macedonian history hung his shoes on a peg. After 22 years of playing, Goran Pandev goes into a well-deserved retirement. In club football, he climbed to the top, with golden letters he also went down in the history of the Macedonian national team.

In the spring round of the previous season, Goran Pandev played in the second tier Parma. In this club he played 11 games and scored one goal. He has been unemployed since July and, as it turns out, he will not be looking for another employer. The 39-year-old decided to end his career.

– I look back and it seems unreal … It was an amazing journey. So many emotions, all of them I take with me and share them with all those who accompanied me on my way. The wonderful chapter is coming to an end … I am taking with me a baggage full of wonderful emotions. I am glad that I could share them with you. Hug, Goran – he wrote on Instagram. The ex-footballer also thanked his family, past and present coaches and directors, as well as everyone else who passed on his passion for football.

Goran Pandev is the first Macedonian player to climb the football summit. At the age of only 18, he moved from his native FK Belasic to Inter, becoming only the second Macedonian in Serie A’s history. He was the club’s player from Milan for two years, but he spent the entire period on loan.

In the summer of 2004 he moved to Lazio where he spent five seasons. However, he parted with the club in an unpleasant atmosphere, for the next six months he was in a legal dispute with the president of Claudio Lotito. Eventually, his contract was terminated in December 2009, and he returned to Inter shortly after. He was there at the perfect time, as a few months later he was able to enjoy the historical triplet. As a result, he also became the first (and to date) Macedonian player to win the Champions League.

After leaving Inter again, the Macedonian played for Napoli, Galatasaray and Genoa. From January 2022, he was a Parma player, which he parted with at the end of the season. As it turned out, it was the last club in his rich career.

In addition to the Inter triplet, Pandev has won several other trophies. Interestingly, he won the Italian Cup four times in a row. In the seasons from 2008/09 to 2011/12 he won successes with Lazio, Inter (two) and Napoli. He also has the club world championship and the Italian Super Cup (both won in Inter) as well as the Turkish championship and Cup (in Galatasaray). He was also elected the Footballer of the Year in his home country five times.

The 39-year-old is also a legend of the Macedonian national team. He is the record holder both in terms of performances (122) and goals scored (38) in the national team. During his time, the national team won the first ever promotion to an international tournament, which was EURO 2020. It should also not be surprising that Pandev is the first ever Macedonian to score at a major event. It happened in the 28th minute of the match against Austria at the aforementioned EURO.
