Technician of Manchester CityPep Guardiola said on Monday that the English club will not try to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mpappé because “everyone knows where he wants to go”. The Spaniard made an apparent allusion to the Real Madrid.
Guardiola met with the press before participating in the Legends Trophy, a golf tournament that brings together former soccer players in the Spanish town of Torroella de Montgrí.
When asked whether he believes City can enter the fray to sign Mbappé, whose contract with PSG ends in June of next year, the coach limited himself to answering with a simple “no”. “You know where he wants to go,” added Guardiola in the face of insistence from journalists.
Last week, Mbappé sent a letter to the French club’s board, saying he will not activate the contract extension clause.
The player, coveted by Real Madrid since last season, said, however, that he will complete his last year of bond with the Parisian club.
The Spanish coach also spoke about Barcelona’s interest in the German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, one of the highlights of the English team in this historic season – City won the treble by taking the titles of the Premier Leaguethe FA Cup and the Champions League.
“I know they are very interested and City are also very interested. We are both very interested. I hope he stays with us, but if he decides to leave he will be an extraordinary signing for Barça.”
“Xavi (Hernández, Barcelona coach) has already called many times. We want him to continue because we believe he is a very important player for us, but if in the end he decides to go, I will say that he will do very well”, concluded Guardiola.
