Dutch striker Quincy Promes of Spartak Moscow, tried for stabbing a cousin at a family party, was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Monday in an Amsterdam court.
The 31-year-old, who had pleaded not guilty to the charge of “attempted manslaughter”, lives in Russia and did not attend the hearings in the case. The prosecution considered it “premature” to ask for his extradition.
Promes is “disappointed” with the conviction and will appeal the decision, his lawyer Robert Malewicz told the Dutch news agency. ANP.
The player is accused of having attacked his cousin during a birthday party in July 2020, when a fight broke out over an alleged stolen necklace.
The court explained that it “took into account the fact that the suspect was a professional player and a public figure when making an exemplary decision”. Promes “not having assumed his responsibilities” also weighed in the decision, adds the sentence.
The prosecutor, who had asked the player for two years in prison last year, had to drop the attempted murder charges due to lack of evidence.
The investigation began after wiretapping related to another case of drug trafficking, which also involves the Dutchman.
The attacker is also accused, since May, of having imported “several hundred kilos” of cocaine.mainly through the port of Antwerp (Belgium), the Dutch public prosecutor informed the AFP.
“We spoke briefly after the verdict,” added Malewicz. “He was disappointed. We will study everything carefully, but he has already asked to appeal”, explained the lawyer.
Quincy Promes, who scored seven goals in 50 caps for the Netherlandsplayed for Eurocopa in 2021, but since then, he has not been summoned by Ronald Koeman.
The player, who became known for standing out at Twente, made his first spell at Spartak Moscow from 2014 to 2018. The athlete defended the Ajax (2019-2021) when it all happened.
Due to his legal problems, he returned to Russia, where he had already been named the best player of the year in 2017.
