Relegated, Leicester appoint Guardiola’s assistant as new manager

Relegated to the Championship (English second division) in the season that just ended, Leicester announced this Friday that their new coach will be the former Italian player Enzo Maresca, who was one of Pep Guardiola’s assistants in the Manchester City.

Maresca, 43, has signed a three-year deal, the 2016 Premier League champions Foxes said in a statement. The new coach played for West Bromwich, Juventus, Sevilla, Olympiakos and Malaga, among others.

Maresca ended his playing career in 2017, with a resume that includes a Scudetto in 2002 for Juve and two UEFA Cups (current Europa League) won with Sevilla in 2006 and 2007.

He started his new career as an assistant at Ascoli in 2017 before becoming assistant to Manuel Pellegrini at West Ham. In 2020, he took over Manchester City’s under-21 team, where he won the Premier League 2 title.

After a short spell at Parma, he returned to City to be part of Guardiola’s coaching staff, contributing to the treble won by Citizens this year: FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League.
