Russian athletes will be allowed to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris on the terms of the “refugee team”. This decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) became known to the All Sport agency.
It is noted that the conditions for the formation of a “team of refugees”, which has existed since 2016, are taken as a basis. According to the source, the leaders of the Russian teams have already been provided with relevant information.
To participate in the Games under the IOC flag and under the name “Neutral Olympic Athletes”, athletes will need to apply in person, without the mediation of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) and national federations. Then a check will be carried out for compliance with the qualification standards and compliance with the criteria of the IOC recommendations.
After the application is approved, the athlete must stop participating in all national competitions and stop accepting any support from Russian sports organizations. All issues, including the development of equipment, will be dealt with by special IOC employees.
On March 28, the IOC recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in a neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be suspended from participation in the starts.
At the end of February 2022, most sports organizations suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus on the recommendation of the IOC.
